The Heart Behind the Tip

Every church wants people to feel welcomed, accepted, and loved. Long before a visitor hears the sermon, they experience the church through the people who greet them.

A warm smile, eye contact, and a simple, “Welcome! Is there someone or somewhere I can help you find today?” can accomplish two things at once: make someone feel genuinely welcomed and help us remain aware of what is happening around us.

Hospitality and awareness are not opposites—they work together.

When a guest needs directions, consider walking with them instead of simply pointing. That short walk builds connection, prevents confusion, and helps them comfortably reach the right place.

The same awareness matters before service, during fellowship, and after worship. Looking around the lobby or hallway isn’t about viewing people with suspicion. It’s about noticing people well enough to recognize when someone may need help.

Church safety isn’t only the responsibility of ushers, greeters, or a safety team. Every member can contribute by being welcoming, attentive, and willing to help.

Sometimes protecting God’s house begins with something as simple as noticing the person who just walked through the door.
