The Property Changed, but the Security Plan Didn’t

Properties change over time.

A business expands.
A new tenant moves in.
An entrance is relocated.
Parking spaces are reassigned.
A wall goes up.
A hallway is added.
Staffing increases.
Delivery traffic changes.

But sometimes, the security plan stays exactly the same.

That can create vulnerabilities that were never part of the original security assessment.

A camera that once had a clear view may now be blocked by construction or landscaping. An entrance that was rarely used may now handle daily traffic. Employees may begin parking in a different area that is less visible after dark. A growing business may have more visitors, vendors, contractors, and deliveries moving through the property than its original access procedures were designed to manage.

Consider these questions:

• Has your property layout changed since your last security assessment?
• Have new doors, gates, parking areas, walkways, or access points been added?
• Have staffing levels, work hours, or shift patterns changed?
• Are cameras, lighting, and patrol areas still positioned for the way the property functions today?
• Do new tenants, vendors, contractors, or employees have clearly defined access procedures?
• Have emergency exits, evacuation routes, and restricted areas been reviewed after renovations or construction?
• Are your written post orders and security procedures based on the property you have now—or the property you had years ago?

A security plan should not be treated as a document that is written once and forgotten.

It should change when the property changes.

Because sometimes a vulnerability is not created by what was done wrong.

It is created by what changed—and no one thought to reevaluate.
